Ingredients

Scale

Ground Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Sautéed Vegetables

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion (additional)

Gravy

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Other Ingredients

  • 3 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • Optional: 1 cup shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
  • Optional seasonings: salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steak Mixture: Combine ground beef, finely chopped onions, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Mix gently to keep the mixture tender. Shape into small, even patties.
  2. Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: In a skillet, lightly sauté the sliced mushrooms and additional onions until tender and fragrant to enhance flavor and reduce moisture.
  3. Make the Creamy Gravy: In the same skillet, add beef broth and sour cream, stirring well to combine. Let the mixture simmer briefly until it thickens into a luscious gravy.
  4. Assemble the Bake: Grease a baking dish. Layer the thinly sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom. Arrange the hamburger steak patties on top of the potatoes, followed by the sautéed mushrooms and onions. Pour the creamy gravy evenly over all the layers.
  5. Bake Until Tender: Cover the casserole with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45-60 minutes until potatoes are tender and the gravy bubbles around the edges. Remove foil in the last 10 minutes for a light golden finish.
  6. Add Cheese and Finish Baking (Optional): Sprinkle shredded cheese on top if desired, and return the bake to the oven uncovered for another 5-10 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the beef to keep patties tender and avoid dense texture.
  • Use a mandoline or sharp knife to slice potatoes thinly for even cooking.
  • Let the bake rest a few minutes after baking to help layers set and ease cutting.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding more beef broth if needed before pouring over the bake.
  • Taste and customize seasonings like salt and pepper in the gravy before assembling.
