The unique poke technique allows the pudding to seep deeply into the cake, creating an indulgent texture that delights in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake Base

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Custard Filling

  • 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix (3.4 oz)
  • 2 cups cold milk

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 container chocolate frosting (about 16 oz)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: Mix the yellow cake mix with eggs, oil, and water according to package instructions until smooth. Pour the batter evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Bake the Cake: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly.
  3. Poke the Cake: Using the handle of a wooden spoon or a skewer, poke holes all over the cake surface to allow the pudding to penetrate thoroughly.
  4. Prepare and Add the Vanilla Pudding: Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix with cold milk until thickened. Pour the pudding evenly over the cake, making sure it seeps into all the holes. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set.
  5. Frost with Chocolate: Spread the chocolate frosting generously and evenly over the chilled pudding layer. Smooth using a spatula for an attractive finish.
  6. Chill and Serve: Return the cake to the refrigerator for at least another hour to let flavors meld perfectly. Slice and serve chilled for the best experience.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs, oil, and water to ensure a smooth batter and even baking.
  • Don’t skip the poking step to allow the pudding to infuse deeply into the cake, maximizing moisture and flavor.
  • Allow the cake to cool slightly before adding pudding to prevent it from melting and losing texture.
  • Chill the cake for at least two hours before serving to blend the flavors beautifully.
  • Choose a good quality chocolate frosting or opt for homemade dark chocolate ganache to elevate the dessert.
