Cuban Chopped Sandwich

Cuban Chopped Sandwich

The Cuban Chopped Sandwich is a flavorful and satisfying meal combining tender ham and juicy roasted pork with tangy pickles and melted Swiss cheese, all pressed between crusty Cuban bread. This sandwich offers a perfect balance of smoky, savory, creamy, and crunchy textures, making it ideal for lunch, dinner, or a hearty snack. Inspired by Cuban heritage, it’s easy to prepare and customizable to suit various dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Meats

  • Thinly sliced ham – about 4 oz
  • Roast pork, thinly sliced – about 4 oz

Vegetables & Condiments

  • Dill pickles, thinly sliced – 3 to 4 slices
  • Yellow mustard – 1 tablespoon

Cheese & Bread

  • Swiss cheese, thinly sliced – 2 to 3 slices (about 2 oz)
  • Cuban bread (or soft baguette) – 1 sandwich loaf, split

For Toasting

  • Butter – 1 to 2 tablespoons, for spreading on bread

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Slice the ham, roast pork, pickles, and Swiss cheese thinly but generously to ensure they layer evenly and the cheese melts smoothly. If Cuban bread is unavailable, use a soft baguette as an alternative.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread yellow mustard evenly on the insides of the bread. Layer the sliced ham first, then add the roast pork over it. Follow with the pickles and top with slices of Swiss cheese, spreading all ingredients evenly to cover the surface.
  3. Toast and Press: Lightly butter the outside surfaces of the sandwich. Heat a skillet or sandwich press over medium heat. Place the sandwich and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side or until the bread is golden brown, crisp, and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  4. Slice and Serve: Remove the sandwich from the heat and slice it diagonally to display the stacked layers. Serve immediately while it’s warm and the cheese is gooey.

Notes

  • Choose freshly sliced ham and pork for optimal texture and flavor.
  • Don’t skip buttering the bread to achieve a crispy, golden crust.
  • Apply even pressure when toasting to compact the sandwich and melt the cheese thoroughly.
  • Balance mustard and pickles to prevent the sandwich from becoming too salty or tangy.
  • Cut the sandwich diagonally for a more appealing presentation and easier eating.
