Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry

  • Store-bought or homemade puff pastry sheets
  • Egg wash (1 egg beaten with a splash of water or milk)

Cream Cheese Filling

  • 8 oz softened cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Strawberry Topping

  • 1 cup fresh ripe strawberries, washed, hulled, and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling: In a bowl, combine 8 oz of softened cream cheese with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly until smooth and creamy, with no lumps for an ideal silky texture.
  2. Prepare the Strawberries: Wash, hull, and slice the fresh strawberries. Toss them gently with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and a sprinkle of sugar (about 1 teaspoon) to enhance their natural sweetness and preserve their vibrant color.
  3. Shape the Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter or a knife, cut out enough heart shapes for the danishe—two hearts per pastry: one bottom layer and one top layer.
  4. Assemble the Danishe: Place a generous dollop of cream cheese filling in the center of each bottom heart-shaped pastry. Layer the strawberry slices evenly on top of the cream cheese. Brush the edges of the bottom heart with egg wash, then carefully place the top heart pastry over. Seal all edges by gently pressing down using a fork.
  5. Bake: Brush the entire surface of the assembled danishe with egg wash to achieve a golden, shiny crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is fully puffed and golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the danishe from the oven and allow to cool slightly on a wire rack. This resting time lets the cream cheese filling set while remaining creamy, making it easy to enjoy.

Notes

  • Use cold puff pastry until just before baking to ensure maximum flakiness.
  • Do not overfill the pastries to prevent leaking and ensure proper sealing.
  • Brushing with egg wash gives a shiny, bakery-quality golden crust.
  • Choose ripe yet firm strawberries to avoid sogginess.
  • Allow the danishe to cool slightly for the filling to set properly.
