Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Fillings or Toppings (optional)

  • Shredded cheese (e.g., cheddar, mozzarella)
  • Cooked bacon or ham slices
  • Fresh spinach or sautéed vegetables
  • Herbs (e.g., parsley, chives)
  • Cinnamon and sugar (for sweet variation)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Activate the yeast by combining the warm milk and sugar in a bowl until bubbly and fragrant. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, eggs, melted butter, and salt, then add the activated yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean cloth. Allow it to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour.
  3. Shape and Fill Your Rolls: Punch down the risen dough gently. Divide it into equal portions. Flatten each piece and add your choice of fillings such as cheese, ham, or vegetables. Roll or fold the dough around the filling and place each roll on a parchment-lined baking tray.
  4. Second Rise and Bake: Let the shaped rolls rest for 15-20 minutes to puff up. Brush the tops with egg wash for a glossy golden finish. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Notes

  • Use warm, not hot, milk to activate the yeast properly.
  • Knead the dough thoroughly to develop gluten for a better texture.
  • Pre-cook fillings like bacon to avoid soggy rolls.
  • Allow the dough to rise fully for fluffy results.
  • Brushing with egg wash creates a glossy, golden crust.
