Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie is a classic Southern custard dessert featuring a creamy, tangy filling made with buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla in a flaky pie crust. Its perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors, combined with a tender, smooth texture, makes this pie a nostalgic and comforting treat for all occasions.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pie Crust

  • 1 9-inch flaky pie crust (store-bought or homemade; gluten-free crust for dietary needs)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust: Press a pre-made or homemade pie crust evenly into a 9-inch pie dish. Chill it in the refrigerator to prevent shrinking during baking.
  2. Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add sugar and flour (or cornstarch), stirring constantly to avoid lumps, ensuring the custard will set properly.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Pour the custard filling into the chilled pie crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 60 minutes, until the edges are set but the center still jiggles slightly.
  5. Cool Thoroughly: Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack. The filling will firm up for easier slicing.

Notes

  • Bring eggs and butter to room temperature for smoother filling.
  • Do not overbake; the pie should have a slight wobble in the center when done.
  • Use foil or a pie shield to prevent crust edges from over-browning.
  • Use fresh buttermilk for best flavor and texture.
  • Test doneness by inserting a toothpick near the edge; it should come out clean.
