Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 4 pita breads (fresh or slightly stale)
  • 3 tablespoons za’atar spice blend (thyme, sumac, sesame seeds, salt)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (for a citrus twist)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or 1 clove minced garlic (for garlic infusion)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red chili flakes (for spicy kick)
  • Grated parmesan or nutritional yeast (for cheesy addition)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pita Bread: Slice pita breads into triangular or chip-sized pieces, approximately 1 to 2 inches wide. Gently press pieces to remove air pockets ensuring even crisping during baking.
  2. Mix the Za’atar Seasoning and Olive Oil: In a bowl, combine za’atar spice, olive oil, salt, and any optional ingredients chosen (lemon zest, garlic powder, cayenne pepper). Stir until fragrant and well mixed to coat evenly.
  3. Coat the Pita Pieces: Toss the pita pieces in the za’atar and olive oil blend, making sure each chip is evenly coated. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the pita chips for 10 to 15 minutes, watching closely after 10 minutes to prevent burning. Bake until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the chips from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet. This helps the chips crisp up further before serving.

Notes

  • Use day-old pita for better crispiness.
  • Ensure even coating of oil and seasoning for maximum flavor.
  • Watch chips closely during baking to avoid burning.
  • Line baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • Store cooled chips in an airtight container to maintain crunchiness.
