Ingredients

Scale

Tofu and Coating

  • 1 block (14 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu, pressed and cut into wing-like strips or bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or panko (use gluten-free if desired)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot (optional, for extra crispiness)
  • 23 tbsp olive oil or avocado oil, for frying or brushing when baking

Maple Sriracha Sauce

  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp sriracha sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari (gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu: Start by draining and pressing your firm tofu to remove as much water as possible, ideally for at least 30 minutes. This step ensures a firm, chewy texture. Then cut the tofu into wing-like strips or bite-sized pieces, based on your serving preference.
  2. Make the Maple Sriracha Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, sriracha, soy sauce, garlic powder, and smoked paprika until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This will be the bold, flavorful coating for your wings.
  3. Coat the Tofu: Dip each tofu piece thoroughly into the maple sriracha sauce to cover fully. Then dredge each piece in breadcrumbs or panko, pressing gently so the crumbs adhere well and form a nice outer shell. For extra crispiness, lightly dust tofu pieces with cornstarch or arrowroot before dipping in sauce.
  4. Cook Until Crispy: Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat and fry the tofu pieces until they turn golden and crispy on all sides. Alternatively, for a healthier option, place the coated tofu pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through to crisp evenly.
  5. Toss with Extra Sauce: Once cooked, toss the crispy tofu wings in any leftover maple sriracha sauce to enhance the flavor and give them a glossy, sticky finish that is irresistible.

Notes

  • Press the Tofu Thoroughly: The drier the tofu, the better and crunchier the final wings will be.
  • Use Panko for Extra Crunch: Japanese-style breadcrumbs provide a lighter, crispier texture compared to regular breadcrumbs.
  • Double Dip for Maximum Flavor: Coat tofu in sauce, then breadcrumbs, and then sauce once again before cooking to lock in moisture and flavor.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Cook in batches if needed to allow pieces to crisp up evenly instead of steaming.
  • Adjust Heat Gradually: Start with less sriracha if you are new to spicy food and increase to taste.
